There
was standing room only at the Organization Meeting held by the
organizers of a Georgia Chapter of The American Chestnut Foundation.
Over 100 interested people from all over the state joined the meeting
held at Cohutta Lodge in July, 2004. Participants had the
opportunity to learn more about American chestnut tree from national
and regional experts and to organize a Georgia chapter of the ACF.
At the forum they indicated their interests by signing up for committees as
wells as learn much about the work of the national foundation and how a
local Georgia chapter could assist in the reforestation of "The King Of
The Forest".
After the meeting, all met for a picnic lunch and chestnut tree
scouting trips at Fort Mountain State Park. Participants viewed
trees in their native habitat. They were also given
permission by the Forestry service to clear brush and competitive trees
from existing
American Chestnuts in order to encourage growth and spring flowers.
