On a ridge line 65 Miles SE of Atlanta
in the FD Roosevelt State Park, DNR Sr. Wildlife Biologist Nathan
Klaus found a grove of flowering American chestnut trees while on a
hike in 2005. A visit to this tree in the spring by Georgia
chapter members was exciting due to the vast quantities of trees
found, burs with viable nuts, no signs of blight and the openness of
the ridge line in the Piedmont. Not much release work will need
to be done. The challenge however, lies in the fact that the
tree in not accessible by bucket truck and too tall for orchard
ladders. As the chapter readies for its second year of
pollination work in Georgia, the Klaus tree will definitely be added
to the list of Mother trees
.
